The surrounding countryside made up of water and earth.
The big city seen in the distance, evoked by the name of the road that runs past here, Via per Milano (Road to Milan). Simply, as if it was a one way road only. Plain lands where the houses should sit quietly, almost as if grazing. Entrenched in a different era. Characters from the waters and rivers which on the threshold of Milan, pass around or under the city, here emerge in a maze of canals and ditches. Houses for this middle ground.. You can use a water hammer to dig fifty metres below ground level here.Reflections on Milan’s public housing, a suspended figure between the city and countryside. Originally, great courts which were able take the measure of the plains in the distance, but also able to make up a city, built by type, clear, definite, precise, repeatable. Dignified. Well built without being openly ostentatious. The base of the house in open brick, towards the top the plasterwork, above all in the courtyard which still yearns to be an interior. It is, in its own way, like a theatre in which to watch the children play.
